NEW YORK (AP) - Caroline Kennedy says while she has "quite a lot to learn," she would also have a lot to offer as a U.S. senator.
Speaking to reporters after lunch with the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem, Kennedy said she would come at the job as a mother, lawyer, author and education advocate. Noting that her family has spend "generations in public service," the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy said she feels a "commitment" and called this "a time when nobody can afford to sit out."
She acknowledged yesterday that she is seeking to be appointed to the Senate seat held by Hillary Rodham Clinton. President-elect Barack Obama has nominated Clinton to be secretary of state.
New York Gov. David Paterson has said he won't make an appointment until Clinton is confirmed.
After the lunch, Sharpton released a statement saying he disagreed with critics who say Kennedy lacks the necessary experience. He says he reminder her that he took Obama to the same restaurant during his campaign, "so it's a good luck stop."
