WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama's team and congressional staff are trying to come up with details of an economic stimulus plan.
The aides met in the basement of the Capitol today to devise ways to pump billions of dollars in public money into science, energy, education, health care and infrastructure programs, as well as to help the poor and unemployed. They hope it will create jobs and lift the economy in the near term.
Obama says the economic problems require a bold approach, but is declining to put a price tag on his plan. He says the money will spent on projects that are good for the American people, not just for politics.
On Monday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi estimated a potential package of about $600 billion.
