Some folks are looking to take advantage of the spirit of generosity many people have this time of year, and they're using the name of the Highway Patrol.

The agency says someone is calling people on its behalf, and asking for donations.

But the Highway Patrol says it does not solicit private citizens; they're funded by tax dollars.

So if anyone says they're calling on behalf of highway patrol or state troopers, hang up and call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 919-716-6000.
