RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Former House co-Speaker Richard Morgan says he's ready to get back into politics after more than a year away from the Legislature.
Morgan filed today as a Republican for superintendent of public instruction, just minutes before the filing period closed at noon. Two other GOP candidates are seeking the party's nomination.
Morgan is known for a historic shared House speakership with Democrat Jim Black in 2003, when the two parties were locked in a stalemate for control of the chamber.
Morgan drew the ire of conservative Republicans who said he betrayed the party. The Moore County insurance executive lost his House seat in a 2006 primary.
Morgan went to the State Board of Elections with his wife, Cindy, who is running for the state Senate.
