There are rules, web sites, and laws in place all to prevent sexual offenders from striking again but doesn't always work. One family in the east says the system needs to be changed. A member of their family is back in jail after yet another arrest for sexual assault of a minor.
The Lenoir County Sheriff's Department arrested 43 year old Ricky Potter Thursday morning after tracking a run away girl to his house.
If’s not the first time he's been caught with a minor. Potter is a registered sex offender in the state. He was paroled in 2007 after serving four years.
Members of Potters family tell us they tried to have his parole denied because they were afraid he would get to and do the same thing again. And deputies say that's just what happened.
The family member we spoke with asked us not to reveal their identity. They said, "It's just a shame that he got out to do it again to someone else’s kids."
They, and other members of their family, feel the law need to be changed.
"I don't think they should have plea bargains on sex crimes. I don't think they should parole them out early. It don't matter how good their doing in there," said the family member.
Captain Jim Oldenburg with the Lenoir County Sheriff's Department says for things to be different, legislation needs to change.
New laws make sense for those family members affected by potter's actions. The family member said, "Why not crack down on the problem and put them where they need to be instead of allowing them to get out or get off so light?"
But they admitted their whole ordeal has left serious wounds for the family to try and heal.
