State officials are lifting an outdoor burning ban after recent rainfall made it safe to burn off excess forest debris. North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Bill Ross said he will lift the ban at noon Saturday. Officials have been using the ban intermittently since extreme drought conditions spread across the state last summer. The ban was last imposed two weeks ago because of dry weather and depleted water resources. By removing the burning ban, wildfire officials hope to provide a window for people to burn off excess underbrush that would otherwise provide fuel for larger fires later in the year. It also eases the burden on state wildfire officials and local firefighters who must respond to every smoke report when the ban is in place.
