(AP) - Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean says the large turnout at the Iowa caucuses shows that Americans are looking to put a Democrat in the White House.
In his party's weekly radio address, Dean says the fact that hundreds of thousands of Iowans came out in bitter cold to caucus on Thursday shows that they want to change the country's political direction. Still, he says, Democrats will have to work to make that happen.
Dean says Republicans have "made it clear time and again" that they will do anything to keep power.
He's referring to alleged Republican schemes to interfere with elections in the past, including a phone-jamming incident in 2002 in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Tuesday.
Dean says the Democratic party is an agent for change, and is urging voters to support the party if they want to get out of Iraq, get affordable health care and refocus the fight on terrorism.
