(AP) - The former Buncombe County sheriff who's charged with accepting money to protect an illegal video poker ring has a new lawyer.
Statements filed Monday in federal court show that Sheriff Bobby Medford will be represented by Stephen Lindsay. Medford's longtime attorney Bob Long asked to be excused from the criminal trial. He did not give a reason Monday.
Long has said that "other individuals" might cause a conflict with his representation of Medford. He did not name the individuals.
Medford is being held in a private cell in Caldwell County.
