(AP) - Governor Mike Easley is worried that well-qualified people could be left off the state Board of Transportation if they're banned from donating to political candidates.
Easley responded Tuesday to the proposal by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Richard Moore. Easley is barred by state law from seeking a third term as governor this year.
Moore said he's trying to reduce the political influence on the powerful board. He also wants banned what's called "bundling," when someone collects several campaign checks and gives them to a candidate all at once.
But Easley said the best way to reduce board politics is to appoint people of integrity. The governor said a ban could lead appointees to find creative ways to participate in campaign fundraising.
