House panel investigating Wright set to meet today

(AP) - The state House committee investigating criminal charges against New Hanover County Rep. Thomas Wright is scheduled to meet today.

That meeting is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in the Legislative Office Building in Raleigh. The committee is slated to look at evidence from state attorneys.

Wright pleaded not guilty last Friday to six felony charges that accuse him of illegally obtaining or misusing more than $350,000 in campaign donations, loans and charitable money.

Wright's attorney blamed many of his client's troubles on sloppy bookkeeping and not illegal activity. Douglas Harris, who entered the plea on behalf of Wright in a Wake County courtroom last week, said he believed his client was innocent based on a review of about 6,800 pages of discovery documents already provided by prosecutors.
