(AP) - The state Democratic Party plans to hold a hearing next month to review the December party vote for Mecklenburg County sheriff.
More than 300 county party members chose Charlotte lawyer Nick Mackey over Chief Deputy Chipp Bailey to replace former Sheriff Jim Pendergraph.
But longtime party activists said about half the precincts whose members voted in the election failed to follow party rules.
The party will hold a hearing February 2 to hear statements from lawyers and witnesses. The party's Council of Review will then decide whether the election was legitimate.
County commissioners haven't confirmed Mackey as the sheriff, with some saying they want to wait for the state party to hear the grievances.
