(AP) - Republican Mike Huckabee is hoping to build on his lead in the polls in South Carolina.
With a win in Iowa and a third-place finish in New Hampshire, the presidential hopeful is trying to reach out to South Carolina's religious conservatives.
He boasted of beating rivals Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson in New Hampshire, saying the two should have had a better showing in the Granite State.
The former Arkansas governor is discounting rival John McCain's foreign policy credentials. He says experience didn't help Democratic Senate veterans Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, who dropped out after Iowa.
South Carolina will mark the first major head-to-head battle between McCain and Huckabee. But the preacher says he doubts things will get nasty, saying "I don't see us going out there and taking the gloves off."
