Huckabee seeks conservative support in South Carolina

»  Comments | Post a Comment

(AP) - Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee continues to seek support from the Christian conservatives who dominate the GOP in South Carolina.

Today, Huckabee -- a former Baptist minister -- spoke from the pulpit at a megachurch, but avoided politics entirely. He instead preached about humility and trusting in Jesus to open the gates of heaven.

Huckabee is encouraging pastors to rally support for him, pitching himself as someone who not only shares their views against abortion and gay marriage but who actually comes from their ranks.

Huckabee is competing for their votes with fellow southerner Fred Thompson, who held no public events today in South Carolina.

Huckabee also is hoping for a majority of the Christian conservative vote in Michigan, where the primary is Tuesday.
