(AP) - Republican Mitt Romney is asking Michigan's electorate to vote its self-interest -- and his.
He's focusing on his Michigan roots and promising to do more than rival John McCain to raise the state out of its economic doldrums. He says he won't rest until that happens.
Michigan has been reeling from the U.S. auto industry's downturn; its 7.4 jobless rate is the nation's highest.
But another appeal he's using is his family's roots in the state. But critics note that while Romey's late father, George Romney, was a popular figure, he last ran for office in 1966 -- more than 40 years ago.
And Romney is dissing another rival. He says Mike Huckabee's record on taxes, illegal immigration and prison commutations isn't the kind of Republican you'd expect to go to the White House.
