(AP) - It's deer season in the town of Elkin, and hunters need only walk outside their homes to track down their prey.
An extended hunting season for deer began at dawn Saturday, and an estimated 400 bowhunters will take part in the effort to reduce an overpopulation problem that some residents label a major safety issue, as well as a nuisance.
One hunter said 1,000 deer could be taken out of the town and it would not make much of a dent in the problem.
State wildlife officials consider bowhunting as the best solution for reducing a deer population in an area because it's safer and more likely to produce a quick kill.
Elkin is taking advantage of a state law passed last year that permits urban archery seasons. The Elkin season runs through Feb. 16, and hunters must have written permission from the landowner before hunting.
