(AP) - Granville County political leaders have rescinded their support for a proposed animal disease research laboratory in Butner.
They said federal authorities have failed to respond to safety questions from local residents.
North Carolina is among five states being considered for the $450 million National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. The lab would study pathogens such as anthrax, avian flu and foot-and-mouth disease.
Supporters said the 520,000-square-foot facility would bring more than 500 scientific, technical and administrative jobs to the Triangle, along with research money for universities.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security said officials will hold meetings to answer residents' questions, though a schedule hasn't been set.
