(AP) - The Republican field for governor is expected to increase to four with the entry of Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory.
McCrory is scheduled to make an announcement Tuesday at the Jamestown library that once housed his elementary school. McCrory has been mum about the event but many predict he will announce his candidacy.
McCrory has recently discussed gang activity and road-building problems in the state's large cities, warning the problems are expanding into rural areas.
If he enters the race, McCrory will have less than four months to campaign before the May 6 primary.
Former Supreme Court justice Bob Orr, Salisbury attorney Bill Graham and state Senator Fred Smith have been running for the GOP nomination for several months.
Democratic Governor Mike Easley is barred by state law from seeking a third consecutive term.
