(AP) - An explosion that targeted a U.S. embassy vehicle in northern Beirut could be heard across the Lebanese capital. It killed four Lebanese and injured a local embassy employee.

The casualty count comes from the State Department in Washington.

Spokesman Sean McCormack says two embassy employees -- including the driver -- were in the vehicle damaged in the blast. He says the driver was slightly wounded and the other staffer is fine. He says no U.S. citizens or diplomats were in the vehicle.

Television footage shows several damaged cars, including an SUV with tinted windows, similar to those used by U.S. diplomats. Plainclothes security agents could be seen removing an automatic rifle from the SUV.
