Parents of slain toddler say they don't want boy, 12, prosecuted

(AP) - The parents of a toddler who was killed by a 12-year-old boy say they don't want the young suspect to be prosecuted.

Police in Florida say the boy has confessed to fatally beating the 17-month-old girl, a second cousin he was babysitting. Authorities say she was killed with a baseball bat January 4th after making noise while the boy was watching a cartoon.

The parents' attorney says they don't want the case to stretch on like that of Lionel Tate, who was 12 when he was charged as an adult in the 1999 beating death of a 6-year-old playmate.

The boy remains in juvenile custody while prosecutors weigh whether to charge him as a juvenile or as an adult.
