CAPITOL HILL (AP) - The House votes today on whether to override the president's veto of a bill that would increase spending on a popular children's health insurance program.
The bill calls for a 35-billion-dollar increase for the program, which provides insurance coverage for children whose families make too much to qualify for Medicaid but can't afford private insurance.
Supporters acknowledge they probably won't get enough votes to overturn the veto, but in a last ditch effort, they plan to stress that as the economy weakens and people lose their jobs or health benefits are cut back, there will be a greater demand for the program.
House Minority Leader John Boehner says today's vote is unnecessary and is simply another case of Democrats playing games. He notes that Congress has already authorized enough money for the program to maintain current enrollment levels through March of next year.
