WASHINGTON (AP) - A federal judge is giving the Bush administration three weeks to explain why some CIA interrogation tapes were destroyed. The judge says the videotapes may have been relevant to his court case, and he wants to know if any other evidence was destroyed.
The tapes showed harsh interrogation tactics used by CIA officers questioning al-Qaida suspects in 2002. The Justice Department is investigating whether destroying the tapes in 2005 violated any laws or court orders.
Several judges are considering wading into the dispute over the destroyed videos, but U.S. District Judge Richard Roberts was the first to order the administration to provide a written report on the matter.
