Deputies with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office says more investigations are underway following the seizure of 100 fighting roosters believed to be part of a cock fighting ring here in the east.
It happened at a home off U.S. 301 near Elm City. 51-year-old Enrique Barajas-Torres was cited with one count of cruelty to animals and possession of paraphernalia of fighting animals.
Authorities investigated the area behind Torres’ home after someone spotted scales where the birds were located.
The Sheriff’s Office says reports of this activity are on the rise due to the influx in the number of Hispanics that have moved to the area and attribute it to their culture.
