CANTON, N.C. (AP) - More than 100 people marched around the Evergreen Packaging plant to protest the waste that it discharges into the Pigeon River.
With the mill's wastewater discharge permit up for renewal, rally organizers said they hope regulators can be convinced to place stricter limits on the chemicals released.
Environmental attorney Gary Davis told The Asheville Citizen-Times Saturday that the technology exists to solve the problem.
Evergreen Packaging now operates the mill, formerly owned by Blue Ridge Paper and Champion International.
Last year the state lifted the last remaining fish consumption advisory for the river. It had been in place since 1988 because of dioxin pollution from the mill. But the mill still can't meet federal and state standards for the amount of color it puts in the river, and the plant operates under a variance from the Clean Water Act.
