CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Tom Merchant can boast that he's one of the best teachers on two continents.
Merchant was named Teacher of the Year at The High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University in Nanjing, China, becoming the first foreign teacher to win the award in the school's 105-year history.
Last Monday, he received the Faculty Exceptional Performance Award from Charlotte Country Day.
On Thursday, Merchant will lead an assembly at Country Day to share the experiences that earned him the Chinese school's top honor. He wants to spread the word about the importance of learning about other cultures.
Merchant told The Charlotte Observer he believes his willingness to connect with the people and desire to immerse himself in the culture helped him win the award at the school in China, which is Country Day's sister school. About 3,000 people initially were eligible for the award.
