RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Mike Easley is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a Marine charged with killing a pregnant colleague.
The FBI also has an outstanding offer of $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of Cpl. Cesar Laurean. Easley announced the additional reward Monday.
Laurean is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach. Her body and unborn baby were found charred and buried in Laurean's backyard in January.
Investigators believe that Laurean has fled to his native Mexico. He left Jacksonville in early January, leaving a note claiming that Lauterbach had slit her own throat. Onslow County authorities have rejected that claim, noting that an autopsy found the woman died of blunt force trauma.
