Transportation Board To Consider More Than $55 Million In Highway Contracts Thursday

RALEIGHThe N.C. Board of Transportation will consider awarding contracts totaling more than $55.4 million for highway improvement projects in 22 counties at its meeting on Thursday, March 6, in Raleigh.


The contracts are for projects in Anson, Ashe, Cherokee, Durham, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Halifax, Henderson, Johnston, Jones, Perquimans, Pitt, Randolph, Rockingham, Rutherford, Stokes, Transylvania, Union, Watauga and Wayne counties.


Included are contracts to:

• Resurface 15.9 miles of highway in Edgecombe and Halifax counties, including two sections of N.C. 97 and one section of N.C. 42 in Edgecombe County, as well as one section of N.C. 903 in Halifax County;

• Resurface 49.4 miles of highway in Johnston County, including two sections of U.S. 70 and one section each of U.S. 301, N.C. 27, N.C. 50, N.C. 210 and N.C. 231, as well as 36 sections of secondary roads;

• Resurface 30.4 miles of highway in Wayne County, including two sections each of U.S. 70 and U.S. 13, as well as 30 sections of secondary roads;

• Mill, resurface and reconstruct the shoulders along 21.5 miles of highway in Durham County, including one section of U.S. 501, one section of U.S. 501 Business, one section of U.S. 501 Bypass, one section of N.C. 55 and 14 sections of secondary roads;

• Resurface 4.3 miles of U.S. 29 from I-40 to north of Cone Boulevard in Guilford County;

• Construct a rest area along both directions of I-73/I-74/U.S. 220 in Seagrove;

• Widen 1.4 miles of Lewisville-Clemmons Road (State Road 1103) from Peace Haven Road (S.R. 1891) to Forest Oaks Drive (S.R. 3580) in Winston-Salem;

• Resurface a total of 6.5 miles of highway in Anson County, including 0.9 miles of N.C. 109 from City Pond Road (S.R. 1142) to Horton Road (S.R. 1211) and sections of White Store Road (S.R. 1228), Tucker Road (S.R. 1443) and Pleasant Grove Church Road (S.R. 1649);

• Resurface and reconstruct the shoulders along 9.4 miles of highway in Union County, including 3.5 miles of U.S. 601 from Unionville Indian Trail Road (S.R. 1367) to N.C. 218 and 1.6 miles of N.C. 522 from Trinity Church Road (S.R. 2166) to the South Carolina state line, as well as 4.3 miles on one section each of Unionville Indian Trail Road (S.R. 1367) and Rocky River Road (S.R. 1514); and

• Resurface 2.1 miles of N.C. 281 from west of Slick Fisher Road (S.R. 1306) to north of Shelton Road (S.R. 1307) in Transylvania County.


In addition, the board will consider awarding contracts for the following bridge work:

• Replace an existing bridge east of Hertford on Cartwright Swamp Road (S.R. 1304) over Sutton Creek in Perquimans County;

• Replace the existing bridge in Trenton on N.C. 41 over Mussel Shell Creek in Jones County;

• Replace the existing bridge in Ayden on N.C. 102 over Swift Creek in Pitt County;

• Replace the Moriah Road (S.R. 1141) bridge over the Tar River in Granville County;

• Replace the bridge over Alamance Creek and its approaches on Mount Hope Church Road (S.R. 3045) in Guilford County;

• Replace the bridge over Big Alamance Creek and its approaches on Company Mill Road (S.R. 3394) in Guilford County;

• Replace the bridge over Rose Creek and its approaches on Candy Creek Road (S.R. 2627) in Rockingham County;

• Replace two bridges and their approaches over Richland Creek south of Asheboro, including the bridge on Pine Hill Road (S.R. 2824) and the bridge on Old Cox Road (S.R. 2834);

• Replace the N.C. 66 bridge over Pinch Gut Creek in Stokes County;

• Replace the Anderson Hill Road (S.R. 1366) bridge over Big Horse Creek in Ashe County;

• Replace the bridge over Mill Creek and its approaches on Railroad Grade Road (S.R. 1106) in Ashe County;

• Replace the Payne Branch Road (S.R. 1541) bridge over Middle Fork Creek in Watauga County;

• Replace the bridge over the Broad River and its approaches on Grays Road (S.R. 1155) in Rutherford County;

• Replace the Hanging Dog Road (S.R. 1331) bridge over Bates Creek in Cherokee County; and

• Replace the Pearl Lane (S.R. 1238) bridge over Mud Creek in Henderson County.


The board meets at 9 a.m. in Room 150 of the Transportation Building located at the corner of Wilmington and Morgan streets in downtown Raleigh. On Wednesday, March 5, at 8:30 a.m., board committees will begin meeting in the Transportation Building.
