YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - Witnesses in Myanmar's capital say a man set himself on fire at the city's most famous landmark in a political protest against the military junta.
They say thousands of pilgrims had gathered for a Buddhist holiday Friday when a man shouted "Down with the military regime." He then doused himself with gasoline and set himself ablaze.
The witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity, citing fear of official reprisal.
A hospital official says the man remains in critical condition with severe burns.
The incident took place at a landmark that served as one of the main gathering points for Buddhist monks and pro-democracy protesters last September. That's when a military crackdown left at least 31 people dead. Thousands more were detained.
