BAGHDAD (AP) - A Kurdish official in Iraq says Iranian forces have fired artillery shells at Kurdish rebels in three towns in northern Iraq.
The official says the shelling lasted about two hours and targeted members of a breakaway faction of the Kurdistan Workers' Party. There are no further details.
The Iranian army frequently shells villages in the mountains of northern Iraq, where it claims that rebels from the breakaway group are based.
Iran has said the group regularly launches attacks into Iran. One former military official says Tehran believes it has a right to strike the group in order to protect Iran's security.
