BOONEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - State emergency management officials say a meat packing plant has exploded in Booneville, forcing homes to be evacuated as ammonia gas leaks into the air.

Emergency management spokeswoman Renee Preslar says the Cargill Meat Solutions plant in Booneville exploded around 2 p.m. Sunday, injuring an unknown number of people. She says the ammonia leak has forced several homes southeast of the plant to be evacuated.

Preslar says a hazardous materials team from Sebastian County is heading to Booneville.

Booneville is a town of more than 4,000 people about 90 miles northwest of Little Rock.
