CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Republican gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory got into the primary race after his competition. But he says he feels he is getting his message out.
McCrory is Charlotte's mayor and one political analyst points out that the Charlotte base hasn't helped four other candidates who were the city's mayor and ran for governor or U.S. Senate.
The 51-year-old candidate used funds left from a mayoral race and raised $400,000 at one Charlotte campaign event alone so he could concentrate on TV ads. McCrory is running his ads in the Triad and Triangle to get his name before voters unfamiliar with Charlotte politics.
McCrory is promoting his experience in local government and paints himself as an outsider in Raleigh.
His opponents are Salisbury attorney Bill Graham, former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr and state Sen. Fred Smith.
