Detroit mayor charged in text-messaging sex scandal

DETROIT (AP) - The Wayne County prosecutor says she plans to bring perjury and other charges against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide.

Kym Worthy said Monday Kilpatrick and one-time Chief of Staff Christine Beatty lied under oath during a whistle-blowers' trial last summer when they denied having a romantic relationship.

A perjury conviction could bring up to 15 years' imprisonment and force Kilpatrick to relinquish his hold on the mayor's office.

City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. has said the City Charter allows for a mayor to be removed if convicted of a felony while in office.
