WASHINGTON (AP) - It's a tradition dating back to 1878, when Rutherford B. Hayes called the White House home.
This year, President and Mrs. Bush presided over their final Easter egg roll. Thousands of children, bundled up against a March breeze, skipped, jumped and crawled across the South Lawn. The Bushes were joined by their daughter Jenna and former first lady Barbara Bush.
Later, Laura Bush read from the book "Arthur's New Puppy," while three children selected by Jenna Bush acted out the story.
The event also featured about 15,000 eggs used either for the egg roll or for dyeing. Each child leaves with a commemorative White House wooden Easter egg and other mementos.
