Rice urges China to start talks with Dalai Lama on Tibetan grievances

»  Comments | Post a Comment

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is urging China to consider a different Tibet policy and to start talks with the Dalai Lama.

Rice says a dialogue with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader is needed to solve Tibetans' grievances. She calls the Dalai Lama a person of authoritative moral stature for people around the world.

China demonizes him as an agitator for Tibetan independence.

Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee says exiled Tibetans can carry on their religious activities in India. But he warns that India will not allow political activities to disturb its relations with other countries.

He and Rice spoke to reporters Monday.

Demonstrations against Chinese rule turned violent March 14 in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.
