COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Some parents worry that their kids' fixation on video games might keep them from doing well in preparing for college. But in some cases, students will be able to argue that playing such games actually prepares them for higher education. These days, a growing number of college professors are using computer games as a tool in the classroom. The games are being used to promote skills like critical thinking, social collaboration and even civic participation. David Shaffer is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He says the kinds of experiences students can have in a video game are more authentic than those that can be staged in a classroom. And with a generation of kids who grew up fiddling with joysticks or game pads, doing so in a classroom won't seem out of place.
