RALEIGH N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's unemployment moved up to 5 percent in February for the first time since December 2005.
Figures released Friday by the Employment Security Commission showed an unemployment rate increase for the second straight month. The rate had remained stable at 4.7 percent for seven months before rising to 4.9 percent in January.
The U.S. unemployment rate was at 4.8 percent in February. It's the first time the national rate has been lower than North Carolina's rate since last June.
Employment Security Commission Chairman Harry E. Payne Jr. said the vital signs of North Carolina's economy remain strong.
Overall employment decreased in February by 19,662 to 4,306,216.
