WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd are calling on China to talk with the Dalai Lama about calming unrest in Tibet.
Rudd met with Bush at the White House this morning, and they later held a joint news conference.
Rudd is a former diplomat who speaks Chinese and was assigned in Beijing. He says, "It is absolutely clear that there are human rights abuses in Tibet."
Tibetan monks have been leading protests against Chinese rule.
Bush called on China to use restraint.
In other matters, Bush praised Australia's efforts in Afghanistan and said he understood Rudd's decision to withdraw 550 combat troops from Iraq. Australia says hundreds of others will stay in Iraq in supporting roles.
