Don’t Touch That Line: Rules For First Responders
Hurricane season is right around the corner! This means whipping winds and torrential downpours which can cause irritating power outages. Folks at Progress Energy want you and our first responders to stay safe. Today they presented a "Live Line Expo" in Onslow County, showcasing what can happen if you touch a live line.
Linemen urge you and first responders not to touch live lines, because you don't have fiberglass rods or special boots that can withstand thousands of volts. Plus they say power lines are deceiving.
Chief of Training Spencer Lee with the Jacksonville Fire Department says, "Fear of the unknown. These electrical lines do not show any flash of electricity, no color, and no visual indicators to know there is electricity on power lines."
Progress Energy also wants to remind you not to call 911 if you have a power outage, unless someone is in danger. If your power goes out call their hotline to report the outage that number is 1-800-419-6356.
