Nine on Your Side's I-Team aired a series this week about differences in educational achievement, between children of different races in our community, and efforts to close the gap. It brought a strong response from some of you, including Pat in
"I have just seen a lopsided, liberal story on why there is an achievement gap between Whites, Asian, Blacks and Latinos. As usual, the problem seems to lie at the hand of the educators. All children sit in the same classrooms."
“I really would like to commend the whole staff of WNCT. You all do a wonderful job. The story I wanted to touch on was the one about 3rd- 8th graders and concerning race. It makes it seem by percentage wise that white students learn more and are smarter than Black or Hispanic students, and that certainly isn't the case.
That certainly isn't the case, which is why we feel it's important to look at this problem: and at ways school systems are trying to solve it. As our reporter Arthur Mondale points out: some of the attempts are new so it'll take time to see results. And Allan responded to our story about a good Samaritan having to pay dumping fees, after helping the community clean up from a tornado.
"This demonstrates the bureaucratic mindset prevalent among public service agencies at many levels. It is so easy to hide behind rules that have been put into place to prevent fraud but were not intended to prevent acts of the Good Samaritan that are documented and necessary."
Not a bad attitude to have. So the next time you feel that doing something for others is just too much of a bother, remember Dave Kurtz who doesn't let a little thing like a missing leg slow him down. In fact, remember all of those who told their stories of Courage After Combat this month. If you want to make a comment or watch the stories, go to our website, key words: Courage After Combat.
