Aside from having a hand in deciding who will be the next president, North Carolinians are also choosing a new governor today.
Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory and Lieutenant Governor Bev Perdue are battling it out for the Executive Mansion in Raleigh.
Perdue and a number of other Democrats are watching election returns at the Marriott in downtown Raleigh tonight.
It sounds like the Perdue camp is feeling cautiously optimistic tonight.
Perdue campaign staffers are hoping Perdue will be able to capitalize on the comeback she's been making in the polls in recent weeks.
McCrory held a lead as recently as a week or two ago, but Perdue has narrowed the gap and numbers out today from Public Policy Polling say she's even got a one point lead now.
Of course, Perdue is from New Bern so her staffers say she's counting on eastern North Carolina to help her make it to the Executive Mansion.
We caught up with both candidates yesterday and they both say bringing jobs to the east will be one of their top priorities if they get elected.
Perdue's candidacy is an historic one. She's campaigning to become the first female governor in North Carolina history.
