Has free speech gone too far?
Some say it has on a popular college web site whose mission claims to be to enable anonymous free speech on college campuses.
The site allows students, in fact anyone who wants, to say what ever they want. And some of it is pretty raunchy, but should it be banned?.
Many on campus say the site is degrading, disrespectful and hateful and they want it taken down.
East Carolina University is one of 500 juicy campuses on a site that lets students post what's on their mind.
The site reads, "It's the place to spill the juice about all the crazy stuff going on at your campus... Totally anonymous - no registration, login or e-mail verification required."
A lot of the content is extremely graphic - targeting students' sexual orientation, looks, promiscuity, and race. Several students tell us they want the site taken down.
Juicy Campus's Terms and Conditions clearly state defamatory or obscene material is not allowed, but they also say they have no obligation to monitor their content.
And while they solicit patrons to report violations they also say, “Juicy Campus cannot and does not guarantee that it will read your report.”
East Carolina University refused to comment on the site or how postings seem to violate the school's own code of conduct which says, “Students shall refrain from knowingly publishing or circulating false information that is damaging to any member of the university community.”
And while the university is not willing to comment a resident advisor is.
"Last night the Residence Hall Association passed a thing to set up a ban of Juicy Campus on residence halls internet connection so we wouldn't be able to get onto it,” said Tiffany Beaver.
There is no time table for when that ban will be in place.
Nine On Your Side talked with Juicy Campus's founder Matt Ivester and asked him some tough questions about the site.
His answers at 11.
