A birthday cake and party weren't enough for Laurey Masterton. After fighting uterine cancer 20 years ago, the Asheville woman is celebrating her "golden birthday" and raising money for cancer research by cycling 3,100 miles across the country. Born in 1954, she turns 54 this year. Her motto: "Don't Postpone Joy." The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Thursday the restaurant owner has already raised $20,000 of her $50,000 goal to support ovarian cancer education and research. Masterton was diagnosed early. She said her body felt different and she paid attention, going to her doctor three times before a mass was detected. She was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer. Nearly 70 percent of cases aren't diagnosed until the cancer has spread to other organs.
