October 2, 2008 – Regina Wyatt, school nurse for Sam Bundy, H.B. Sugg, and Ridgewood elementary schools, has been selected as the 2008 School Nurse of the Year by the School Nurse Association of North Carolina. This statewide award is presented to one school nurse annually who has demonstrated excellence in school nurse practice and has made significant contributions in four categories: Creative Programs and Ideas; Professional Development; Political Contributions; and Community Involvement. The award was presented at the association’s annual meeting in Greensboro, NC, on September 25th.
Among other accomplishments, Mrs. Wyatt is credited with developing numerous “tools” used to improve the quality of school nurse services rendered to students in the county. She received degrees in nursing and education from Petersburg General Hospital School of Nursing in Petersburg, Virginia and George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Mrs. Wyatt has been a school nurse for ten years, and achieved national certification in the specialty of school nurse practice in 2000.
Travis Lewis, Executive Director of Student Services at Pitt County Schools, refers to Regina as “a model for excellence in school nursing that all educators should wish for their schools”. Kay Regnier, a fellow school nurse, describes her as “a compassionate individual who is always willing to go that extra mile for her students, teachers, and fellow school nurses. With Regina, it’s always about the other person – and that’s part of what makes her such a special school nurse.”
