Greenville's Town Common hosts: Walk to Defeat ALS

600 people got out of bed and put on their walking shoes in Greenville today.

Teams from across the east met at the Town Common to raise money and awareness for ALS, also known at Lou Gherig’s Disease.

The disease affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.

Following a ribbon cutting, each team began the three mile walk around Greenville.

"There are so few people who know about this disease and the more awareness and education that we put out there, the better we are and the faster we can get a cure and a cause for this disease," said Marty Devericks, Event Coordinator.

Devericks said the goal was to raise $50,000 and before the walk began they were about halfway there.
