Greenville, NC – East Carolina University’s College of Education will conduct the Annual Educators Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on October 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in Fletcher Recital Hall. The ceremony will be followed by a reception for inductees and their guests for the viewing of their plaques displayed on the Educators Hall of Fame wall located in the Speight Building. The Educators Hall of Fame recognizes the service of those whom East Carolina alumni and friends are most grateful. This permanent recognition was inaugurated in the fall of 1999, and is displayed prominently in the Speight Building on the ECU campus.
This year’s speaker, State Superintendent June St. Clair Atkinson, has served as the North Carolina State Superintendent of Public Instruction since August 2005. Dr. Atkinson is the first woman elected to the post of State Superintendent. She oversees more than 1.4 million students in over 2,300 public schools.
In the past nine years, more than 300 outstanding educators have been inducted into the Educators Hall of Fame. Among this year’s inductees were Wynnette Garner Alexander, June Atkinson, Tony Banks, Gina Beaman, Dorothy Brannan, Sylvian K. Brooks, Austin Bunch, Mary Beth Corbin, Ernestine Wynne Garner, Tony Gray, Lilla Holsley, Lennon Hooper, Gwen Goodson Jeffreys, Paul Jones, Charles E. Long, Dorothy Pruitt, Rita Reaves, Pamela Strickland, John Swope, Jerry Tolley, Sarah Williams and Ted Williams.
Members inducted into the Educators Hall of Fame are university professors, teachers, counselors, school board members, or other persons whose service made an impact in the lives of those recognizing them through a monetary gift. All gifts received go to the Hall of Fame Scholarship endowment. Annual interest from the $1 million endowment will fund merit-based scholarships for College of Education students. This prestigious merit scholarship program attracts more of the best and brightest students to the College of Education at ECU.
The first recipient to receive the scholarship award was Hannah Elizabeth Adams from Warsaw, NC. The 2008 Educators Hall of Fame recipient was Stephanie Moses from Robersonville, NC. Both students received the scholarship in the amount of $2500 per year for four years and serve as ambassadors for the College of Education.
The goal of the Educators Hall of Fame program is two-fold. One, it is a way for the College of Education to honor outstanding education professionals: and two to create a scholarship endowment to support our future outstanding educators.
