On Thursday, September 18 at 7 PM, the mother of Matthew Shepard and gay rights activist, Judy Shepard will speak in Mendenhall Student Center Hendrix Theatre on the campus of East Carolina University.

Greenville, N.C. -“In a perfect world, because your child is gay, you don’t worry about their safety. You just worry about them being happy. I loved Matt just the way he was. Just the way he was;” as a quoted by his mother Judy. On Thursday, September 18 at 7 PM, the mother of Matthew Shepard and gay rights activist, Judy Shepard will speak in Mendenhall Student Center Hendrix Theatre on the campus of East Carolina University.
The tragedy that was Matthew’s death in 1998 quickly spurred a spontaneous public outcry from coast to coast. This incident galvanized millions of people and focused the nation’s attention on the growing epidemic of hate crimes. Vigils were held across the country; and the Shepard family received thousands of letters and emails of support.
ECU’s Hate Out Week, is a weeklong event will promote unity, tolerance and understanding of differences on the university campus. Come experience interactive programs and be challenged to confront issues of oppression and discrimination. Join Intercultural Student Affairs as they present Judy Shepard as the featured speaker Hate Out Week.
