Dozens of firefighters and emergency responders from across North Carolina are expected to be at Craven Community College this weekend, but fortunately it won’t be an emergency!
The college will be hosting the 32nd annual Craven Fire and Rescue College Friday-Sunday, Sept. 26-28.
More than 250 firefighters and emergency responders are expected to attend the three-day event, which will feature instruction in the latest firefighting and emergency-response technology.
The event also gives participants a chance to compare notes with fellow emergency responders from other regions of the state, said Bob Bordeaux, coordinator of the Fire and Rescue College.
Nearly 30 courses will be offered at on- and off-campus locations during the weekend. The courses consist of a combination of classroom lessons from state-certified instructors and hands-on activities.
Students who complete the classroom and practicum parts of a class will be eligible to take a written test. If they pass the test, they’ll be certified in that class.
A particularly popular course this year is the one dealing with personal protection equipment such turnout gear and air packs, Bordeaux said. He also said the college would be offering a course on how to use victim-extrication equipment at vehicle crash scenes.
