Craven Community College is marking National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October with an information symposium and a concert at the New Bern campus.
The events, which are being organized with help from New Bern Cancer Care, are designed to provide the latest information about the detection and treatment of breast cancer, which is among the leading causes of cancer deaths for American women.
Organizers say they hope to educate the community about breast cancer, to advocate for wider services for patients dealing with it, and to continue the work to eradicate the disease.
“Again this year, we are asking everyone who participates in these events to wear pink,” said Vickie Moseley-Jones, Craven’s human resources director. “This is our way of showing support for the cause and to honor co-workers, family members and friends that we have lost to this disease.”
Breast cancer is a topic of special interest at Craven Community College. Two college employees, Nettie Williams and Ann Novak, died of the disease in 2005. Others have battled it.
The events begin with the “Pink Ribbon Luncheon” on Thursday, Oct. 2, at noon in Orringer Auditorium.
Dr. John Cho of New Bern Cancer Care will present a lecture about early detection of breast cancer and treatment options for it. There also will be a question-and-answer sessions, as well as testimonials from survivors.
Refreshments will be served following the program.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, recording artist Kate Campbell will be at Orringer Auditorium to present a concert to raise awareness of breast cancer. The concert will begin at 7 p.m.
Campbell is a Mississippi native and the daughter of a Baptist pastor. Her music is heavily influenced by country and folk music, as well as soul and R&B.
Tickets are $15 each and are available in the college’s Human Resources Office (Brock Administration Building) or at New Bern Cancer Care.
