Progress Energy Carolinas will shut down three coal-fired power plants on the Neuse River near Goldsboro.

Progress Energy is asking for the state to approve construction plans for a new natural gas facility at the site. Progress says when it's done, that facility will increase the amount of electricity produced at the site by about 550 megawatts.

It will also reduce overall emissions, including carbon dioxide.
