ORANGE, Va. (AP) - Local officials in central Virginia have given Wal-Mart approval to build a store near a famed Civil War battlefield.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 early Tuesday to approve the 138,000-square-foot Supercenter near the Wilderness Battlefield in Locust Grove. The vote followed a 6 1/2-hour meeting, including a four-hour hearing at which more than 100 people spoke.
A who's who of historians and preservation groups opposed the store near the bloody battlefield where Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee first met in battle 145 years ago. Nearly 30,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were injured or killed at the Wilderness.
But Wal-Mart has said the store would be shielded from visitors to the battlefield and will bring jobs and tax revenues to the rural county.
