BUXTON, N.C. (AP) - The state Coastal Resources Commission will hear about a study that says a portion of the Pamlico Sound is the best spot in North Carolina for a utility-scale wind energy farm.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported that the commission will meet Thursday, when it will hear about a feasibility study from the University of North Carolina. The study found that most state waters aren't suitable for wind-energy development.
Class 5 winds or greater are required to support utility-scale wind farms, based on a scale of 1 to 7. The study says such power is found in the eastern Pamlico Sound but is less likely to be found in sounds elsewhere.
